Kid Cudi’s “Love.” Track and The Execution of Timing

Timing significantly plays a role in how music hits my soul and spirit. An artist can execute the plan of what they want to get across creatively to their target audience and still fail to execute the timing piece. When both timing and execution work together, it can create historic meaning to the listener; that pinpoint never leaves.
There are many Kid Cudi songs that many like myself utilized to get through the darkest of days, but “Love.” specifically this track, spoke to me in a way that helped me feel better about my journey. It wasn’t just the song, it was the moment in time.
I can recall it being early March of 2015 and my life was in a rough patch. It was the beginning of the end for relationships, friendships and outlook on life; an unwanted transition at the time. I remember the notification on my phone: Kid Cudi has just posted a track. The beat tranquilized me during the early moments, but then I could feel the tears attempt to jump from my eyes. Cudi’s vocals and lyrics tore a hole in my heart as he shouted “I fight it everyday…why am I this way?” I felt that. The fight of myself and not understanding how to handle life as a 22-year-old man. Growth was needed.

Peace was received and pain was released. As I listened, it was in that moment, I realized that I am not fighting this battle alone. Cudi has a way of making you feel like he’s walking with you in your pain and his own. I took steps forward in life with Cudi— I had to learn to walk on my own when the song cut off. These are the moments that quickly make me feel weak and dependent, but also the moments that bring me the most strength and increase my independence.
When I think of Kid Cudi and all that he’s done for hip-hop and outside of music, he’s a miracle worker. To express your pain and have other people relate to that pain is not the best way for the story to end. What becomes the fairy tale is the pain realizing relativity and going above and beyond to find joy in one’s life. I feel Cudi’s pain through “Love.,” because I too feel my own pain. However, the positive outlook that’s provided in the midst of darkness blinds me to dark clouds. Whether it’s for five minutes and 40 seconds or shorter, I gain the courage to keep going, very similar to some of the people below who left comments on Youtube/Soundcloud about the song and Cudi’s gift of guidance.
